News now: 'He looked brilliant': Wright-Phillips thinks Man City have a gem on their hands, after Yokohama game

Oscar Bobb's performance for Manchester City versus Yokohama F. Marinos impressed Shaun Wright-Phillips.

At the weekend, City played their first preseason match against the Japanese team.

With eight goals scored on the night, it was a little bit of a drama.

City scored goals from John Stones, Rodri, Julian Alvarez, and Erling Haaland (two), giving Pep Guardiola's team a 5-3 victory to start their preseason tour of Asia.

The final score was somewhat meaningless, though.

These matches are an opportunity for players to get some playing time under their belts as well as for the manager to observe young players and fringe players.

He has been crushing it for the EDS and has won Player of the Year honors each of the last two years.

Guardiola gave him a chance to shine against Yokohama, and he did so.

Bobb appeared to be direct and displayed some pretty good touches.

And Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joleon Lescott, who are both now in Japan working for City's Matchday Live, were both impressed by his performance.

"I thought he looked brilliant," he added of Bobb.

He has the ability to move defenders around, thus I'd want to see him attack them more.

"When he did square them up, he tried to always pick out the right man and make the right decision, which is a fantastic start for a youngster in the first team."

It's interesting to note that Bobb didn't evaluate his own work.

Oscar Bobb looks a serious talent

Bobb is without a doubt one of City's top young players.

According to rumors, the club allegedly turned down a £15 million offer for Bobb from a prestigious club.

City reportedly thinks he is worth a lot more than that.

It will be fascinating to watch whether he makes Pep Guardiola's team for 2023–2024.

Riyad Mahrez is undoubtedly leaving the team to join Al Ahli. Therefore, there might be room for him.

Despite this, Cole Palmer might believe he is in line for an opportunity to play on the right wing, unless Guardiola plans to frequently employ Bernardo Silva there.
