Chelsea fans have been advised to keep a watch on the situation with Romeo Lavia merely because of Joe Shields' presence at Stamford Bridge.

According to reports, Fabrizio Romano was the one who warned Chelsea fans to keep an eye on the Belgian international's position at Southampton.

So, what's new with Romeo Lavia and Chelsea? Let us have a look at the full story....

According to Sky Sports, the Southampton No.45 is a target for Chelsea, and the Blues are willing to outbid competitors to acquire his signature.

That piece was published nearly two weeks ago, but the majority of the discussion coming out of Stamford Bridge since then has been about Moises Caicedo. However, Romano has now highlighted why Chelsea fans should not forget about Lavia.

"I will keep an eye on Chelsea until the end of the story because they have Joe Shields, the former director of Southampton and Manchester City, who has always been close to Romeo Lavia, almost created Romeo Lavia as a player, and so this is why they're always monitoring the situation,"

Shields, who is now the Director of Recruitment and Talent at Chelsea, recruited Lavia for Southampton in a £14 million deal from Manchester City in July 2022.

The 19-year-old thrived in his rookie season at Southampton, and many now expect him to return to a top-six club after the Saints were demoted to the Championship. Lavia is thought to be worth £50 million to Southampton.

Chelsea must make a choice on Lavia as soon as possible.

It goes without saying that Chelsea prioritize Caicedo over Lavia. However, negotiations with Brighton are proving tricky after Chelsea's £70 million bid was rejected.

Lavia has other suitors, including Liverpool and Arsenal, so time is of the essence for Chelsea here. The Blues will undoubtedly want to avoid a nightmare scenario in which negotiations for Caicedo fail, but Lavia has already moved to a Premier League competitor, so Chelsea must make a choice fast.
